RALEIGH, N.C. –Professor Matt Sawchak has been certified as a specialist in appellate practice by the North Carolina State Bar Board of Legal Specialization. He teaches civil procedure and antitrust, among other courses, at the Campbell University Norman Adrian Wiggins School of Law.
In addition to serving on the Campbell Law faculty, Sawchak practices appeals, antitrust, and business litigation at Ellis & Winters LLP in Raleigh. As one of his many professional activities, he has chaired the North Carolina Bar Association’s Appellate Rules Committee.
“At Campbell Law School, we focus on developing law practice skills, as well as subject-matter knowledge, in our students,” Sawchak said. “One of the ways we do this is by encouraging our professors to make meaningful contributions of their own to the profession. I am grateful that the North Carolina State Bar has recognized my contributions to appellate practice.”
To be certified as a specialist, a lawyer must be an active member in good standing with the North Carolina State Bar for at least five years, must devote at least 25 percent of his practice to the specialty during the past five years, must attend continuing legal education seminars in the specialty, must be favorably evaluated by other lawyers and judges, and must pass a written examination in the area of practice.
Professor Sawchak earned his undergraduate degree with honors from Harvard University, where he was a National Merit Scholar. He earned his law degree with honors and his master of laws degree from Duke Law School. He was the editor-in-chief of the Duke Law Journal.
Professor Sawchak clerked for Justice Clarence Thomas at the United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit, and in the office of the Solicitor General of the United States.
