Buies Creek, N.C. – What is heaven really like? Recounting the story of a Baptist pastor involved in a fatal accident, bestselling author Cecil Murphey gives us a glimpse in his book, “90 Minutes in Heaven,” co-authored by Pastor Don Piper. Murphey will speak at Campbell University on Wednesday, March 11, at 7 p.m. in Scott Concert Hall of the Taylor Bott Rogers Fine Arts Center.
On the way home from a conference, Don Piper’s car was crushed by a semi-truck that crossed into his lane. Medical personnel said he died instantly. While his body lay lifeless inside the ruins of his car, Piper experienced the glories of heaven, awed by its beauty and music. His real message, however, is that heaven really does exist and that is why it is important to live life according to God’s plan.
“The event is a time for would-be writers and lovers of books to ask the man behind the words about his work,” said Dr. Michael Smith, professor of Mass Communication. “Cecil Murphey has sold millions of books and his work has been translated into more than 30 languages.”
Murphey’s other books include “Gifted Hands: The Ben Carson Story,” which premiered on TNT as a Johnson Spotlight Presentation Movie, and “I Choose to Stay,” which has been optioned by a major move studio. “90 Minutes in Heaven” has also been optioned for a feature film. It has appeared on the New York Times bestseller list since Oct. 2006 and was included on “USA Today’s” list of top 150 bestselling books in the last 15 years.
Prior to launching his career as a full-time writer and speaker, Murphey served as a pastor in Atlanta, Ga., he also volunteered as a hospital chaplain and was a missionary to Kenya. He holds bachelor’s degrees in education and religious education, as well as master’s degrees in education and theology. The event is free and open to the public.
