Buies Creek, N.C.–Raleigh pharmacist F. Michael James is the recipient of the 2008 M. Keith Fearing Award from Campbell University. The award was presented on May 6, at Campbell University.The M. Keith Fearing Community Pharmacy Practice Award is given in memory of Keith Fearing, a 1941 Campbell alumnus who was instrumental in the establishment of the Campbell University School of Pharmacy. The Fearing award was established in 1997 to honor Fearing’s memory and his contributions to community pharmacy practice.The owner and operator of Person Street Pharmacy, F. Michael James has been an advocate for the pharmacy profession for many years, working with the state government on Medicaid issues and the development of state prescription programs for seniors and children. James also helped to develop the Washington Pharmacy Student Intern program in which students perform an internship in the offices of members of the U.S. Congress. James serves as a preceptor for these students.In addition, he has served on the North Carolina Health Coordinating Council, the State Medicaid Committee and the State Banking Commission. He has also served on the boards of numerous professional organizations, including the North Carolina Pharmacy Association, the North Carolina Retail Merchants Association (chairman), First Citizens Bank and the Raleigh Rescue Mission. James was a Fellow of the American College of Apothecaries and chairman of the National Legislative Committee and the National Community Pharmacy Association.Instrumental in the development of a new pharmacy course at Campbell that focuses on pharmacy and health care legislation, James helped establish a training experience for students enrolled in this course in which they are able to serve as interns in the offices of U.S. Congressmen. Two students were able to intern in Washington, D.C., this past year. James was named “National Independent Pharmacist of the Year and “North Carolina Ambulatory Pharmacist of the Year.””Mike James is an excellent pharmacy role model,” said Dr. Ronald Maddox, dean of the Campbell School of Pharmacy. “His service to his community and his profession through community pharmacy practice is commendable.
