Buies Creek, N.C.—Kelly A. Best, of Goldsboro, N.C., is the recipient of Campbell University’s Gladys Baars Campbell full scholarship. Best is a senior at Rosewood High School in Goldsboro.
An English and Communication studies major, Best has a cumulative high school grade point average of 3.9 and is ranked first in her high school class. She would like to be a high school English teacher in order to help students learn the important skills of communication and grammar.
“The studies of English and communication are beneficial in many areas of every day life,” Best wrote in an essay. “Understanding the communication process helps those working in business, medicine and industry. Through English and communication, I want to help students reach their fullest potential.” In addition, Best would like to continue graduate studies at Campbell to obtain a Master of Education.
Best placed first in the state and third in the nation in public speaking at a Future Business Leaders of America Communications event and has attended yearly conventions and camps with Future Business Leaders of America. Best also attended the North Carolina Governors School this past summer.
She is the daughter of James and Cathy Best.
“Everything I learn at Campbell I would put to use as a high school teacher,” Best said. “A teacher who has received a quality education is able to provide a quality education for their students.”
Gladys Baars Campbell Scholarship
A native of Duplin County, Gladys Baars Campbell graduated from Campbell Academy in 1924. She received training to become a nurse at Charlotte Sanatorium. Her nursing career spanned 43 years.
The first Gladys Baars Campbell Scholarship awards were made during the 1987-1988 academic year at Campbell. The first full scholarship competition was held in the 2001-2002 academic year. Best is the 11th student to receive the full, four-year scholarship which includes tuition and mandatory fees, housing, meal plan, parking and text books.
