Buies Creek, N.C.-Iraq War hero Lt. Col. Scott Rutter (U.S. Army retired) was named a Distinguished Alumnus of Campbell University’s department of Government, History and Justice. Rutter received the award during Homecoming ceremonies on Saturday, Oct. 24.
Currently the director of Strategic Programs for global defense contracting company BAE Systems-Heavy Brigade Combat Team Systems, Rutter graduated from Campbell University’s ROTC program in 1983. During his Army career, Rutter worked his way up from Rifle Platoon leader with the 101st Airborne Division to battalion commander in the 3rd Infantry Division that fought in Operation Iraqi Freedom. Rutter retired from the Army after 20 years of service.
During Operation Iraqi Freedom, Rutter commanded the 2nd Battalion, 7th Infantry “Cottonbalers” in the 3rd Infantry Division and made the initial assault into Iraq all the way to Baghdad as part of the “Tip of the Spear.” His unit assaulted the Iraqi Special Republican Guard and secured the Baghdad International Airport. Rutter’s regiment was one of the most highly decorated combat units in the initial operations and Rutter, himself, has received the Silver Star, the Bronze Star, the Legion of Merit, Bronze Star with Valor Devise and the Joint Meritorious Service Medal. He was awarded the Combat Infantryman’s Badge for his participation in combat operations in Desert Storm/Desert Shield and Operation Iraqi Freedom.
As a result of his military experience, Rutter is a regular contributor to several news agencies as a media analyst and reporter. He was embedded with Fox News covering many areas in Iraq, most notably at the Battle for Fallujah. Rutter also serves as president of the Valor Network, vice chairman for Vets for Victory and president of the 7th Infantry Regiment Association. He also serves as the national spokesman and member of the board of directors for TAPS (Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors).
He received a master’s degree in management from the University of St. Mary and is a graduate of the U.S. Army’s Command and General Staff College.
