Ryoanji Duo to perform at Campbell

Buies Creek, N.C.-A blend of classical guitar and saxophone, the Ryoanji Duo has performed throughout the United States and abroad. On Tuesday, Feb. 3, this unique chamber group will appear in concert at Campbell University at 8 pm. in Scott Concert Hall of the Taylor Bott Rogers Fine Arts Center. Admission is free and open to the public.

Saxophonist Frank Bongiorno, a professor of music at the University of North Carolina at Wilmington, has taught saxophone and jazz studies since 1982. His students have received both national and international recognition and have been reviewed in both “DownBeat” magazine and “Jazzfest USA.” As a recitalist, orchestral soloist, jazz artist and clinician, Bongiorno’s work has received critical acclaim.

Guitarist and saxophonist Robert Nathanson is also am active orchestral soloist and ensemble performer. Said to be a champion of new music, Nathanson has commissioned and recorded works by David Kechley, Jing Jing Luo, Ernesto Garćia de León and other contemporary artists. He has been touring as part of the Ryoanji Duo (saxophone and guitar) and the North Carolina Guitar Quartet since 1992.

Featured works in the program are “Images of China” by Jing Jing Luo, “Rock Garden,” by Daniel Worley, “Descanga,” by Ermesto Cordero, works by Handel and other selections.
