BUIES CREEK —Sigma Alpha Omega became the first fully chartered undergraduate Greek organization at Campbell University on Friday.
The Campbell chapter of the Christian-based sorority, founded in 1998 at North Carolina State University, was initiated Friday evening in a secret ceremony on the main campus. Members of SAO’s National Board of Trustees were on hand for the ceremony, which was followed by training and fellowship throughout the weekend.
Campbell’s other active Greek organization, Kappa Sigma, is scheduled to receive its charter in December.
“We’re really excited to not only be the first organization on campus, but also to have so much support from not only Campbell but the community,” said Kendall Tart, a junior from Benson who serves as president of the Campbell chapter of SAO.
For now, the sorority is focused on establishing its bylaws and committees, but will begin recruiting in the spring. Information for prospective members will be released in the coming months following the winter break, Tart said.
“We are looking forward to bringing in new girls who are interested in the same morals and values we encompass and to grow our organization,” Tart said. “We not as concerned about the number [of new members], but in the quality of the girls who join.”
