BUIES CREEK — Campbell University’s baccalaureate service for its spring graduation will be held at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday in Butler Chapel.
The commencement sermon will be delivered by Dr. Lydia Hoyle, associate professor of church history and Baptist heritage for Campbell Divinity School.
Joining Hoyle will be the University Choir and organist Daniel Hester (’79) with performances; and graduating seniors Courtney Williamson, Tonisha Baker and Jordan Tripp will deliver the invocation, reading of the scriptures and benediction respectively.
Dr. Hoyle came to Campbell in 2003 from Georgetown College in Kentucky, where she had served on the religion faculty for 13 years. While at Georgetown, she not only was a distinguished member of the faculty, but also shouldered important administrative responsibilities with committee and other leadership tasks. Her teaching fields are Christian history, American religion, women’s history and Baptist history; and her research interests and publications have included works in the areas of women and missions, children and mission education, Baptist history and women in ministry.
Currently, she is working on a study of Baptists and children. Originally from Drexel, N.C., Hoyle earned a bachelor of science degree from Appalachian State University in 1980, and a master of divinity from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in 1984. She entered the University of North Carolina and subsequently earned both the master of arts (’87) and the doctor of philosophy (1992) in religious studies.
Dr. Hoyle is married to Rich Hoyle, a social psychologist at Duke University. They are the parents of three children: Matthew, Michael and Jessica. They are active members of the Greenwood Forest Baptist Church in Cary.
