Buies Creek, N.C.-Lloyd Stuart Surles, of Angier, N.C., was named a Distinguished Alumnus of Campbell University at the 2009 Homecoming celebration on Saturday, Oct. 24. Surles is the owner of Stuart Surles Insurance, Inc. in Angier.
Surles graduated from Campbell in 1977, receiving a Bachelor of Arts in Business Administration.
As the youngest son of a sharecropper on a farm in Angier, Surles financed his Campbell education by farming five acres of tobacco and working at various part-time jobs.
“I strongly believe and support the mission and goals of Campbell University,” he said. “Campbell afforded me the type of education that most people strive for, solid academics coupled with professors and support staff who took a genuine interest in each student.”
An active member of his community, Surles has served on the Harnett County Social Services Board of Directors and is the charter president of the Angier Rotary Club. In 1998 he was presented the Platinum Sales Award by the Rural Community Insurance Services organization. Surles also received the Outstanding Service Award from the National Crop Insurance Service for 2001.
He has supported Campbell University through his generosity and membership on the Presidential Board of Advisors. In 2007, Surles received Campbell’s Adam Smith Club Free Enterprise Award.
Surles is a member of Trinity Baptist Church of Angier. He has two daughters, Morgan, a second-year pharmacy student at Campbell, and Brooke Blackman, a junior at N.C. State University.
