Buies Creek, N.C.-Kathryn Elizabeth Swanzey, of Warsaw, N.C., has received the Gladys Baars Campbell Scholarship to Campbell University, a full scholarship valued in excess of $80,000. Swanzey will graduate from North Duplin Senior High School in June 2009 and wants to pursue a pre-med education in biology or health science.
“I would like to earn a degree in radiology, though I have also considered pediatrics,” Swanzey said. “Much like any other young hopeful entering the world of medicine, I am striving to not only treat and cure patients, but to make a greater, more lasting impact on the lives of those I will work with.”
During her high school career, Swanzey served as a personal tutor to many of her classmates.
“I have watched kids pass who have struggled through and failed a few times prior,” she said. “I have felt the rewards of hearing a teacher remark on how much a child has improved because some one-on-one time with a tutor has helped them to better understand a concept.”
Swanzey was elected president of the Science Club and has served as church youth group president, representative on the School Improvement Team, Student Council representative and member of the Prom Committee. She also attended Governor’s School in mathematics. Swanzey maintains a 4.46 cumulative grade point average.
She is the daughter of Henry and Kathy Swanzey of Warsaw.
