RALEIGH, N.C. – Twenty four members of the Norman Adrian Wiggins School of Law class of 2009 took part in the inaugural swearing in ceremony on September 18th at the Law School’s new home in downtown Raleigh. The Honorable John R. Jolly, Jr., a sitting Superior Court judge, officiated the ceremony. Guest speakers included Philip Isley of the Raleigh City Council and David Bohm of the North Carolina Bar Association.
“This is the first day of your professional life,” said Judge Jolly. “You can do great things for your fellow man, community and country through the practice of law.”
The event offered graduates who passed the North Carolina Bar Exam the opportunity to become an official member of the North Carolina Bar Association at a special occasion to be shared by friends and family.
Each graduate took the following oath:
I, ________________________________________, do solemnly affirm that I will support the Constitution of the United States.
I, ________________________________________, do solemnly and sincerely affirm that I will be faithful and bear true allegiance to the State of North Carolina and to the Constitutional powers and authorities which are or may be established for the government thereof; and that I will endeavor to support, maintain and defend the Constitution of said state, not inconsistent with the Constitution of the United States, to the best of my knowledge and ability.
I, ________________________________________, do affirm that I will truly and honestly demean myself in the practice of an Attorney, according to the best of my knowledge and ability.
“We are so proud of our graduates,” said Dean Melissa Essary. “And we are excited to be hosing this even here at our new location. Even though this group did not attend class in this building, we want them to feel at home here and know that our new home is also theirs.”
