On Oct. 29, 1929, better known as “Black Tuesday,” the United States stock market crashed, leading to the Great Depression and the New Deal. Bloomberg syndicated columnist Amity Shlaes, leading authority on 20th century finance, will be the featured speaker at Campbell University’s Politics, Law and Economics lecture on Monday, Oct. 29, at 7 p.m. in Lynch Auditorium of the Lundy-Fetterman School of Business. Shlaes will discuss the Great Depression and the New Deal. Her latest book, “The Forgotten Man,” shatters the conventional wisdom concerning the Great Depression and the New Deal–that businessmen, bankers and Republican presidents of the 1920’s were responsible for the crash.”Forget what you think you know about the Great Depression and the New Deal,” said Dr. Derek Yonai, professor of business and holder of the Lundy Chair. “Join us on the anniversary of Black Tuesday for a fascinating and gripping talk.”Amity Shlaes is a syndicated columnist for Bloomberg financial news service and a senior fellow at the Council on Foreign Relations. In addition to writing on political economy, she writes on taxes. She is a contributor to “Marketplace,” the public radio show, and has appeared on numerous radio and television shows over the years. She is a former columnist for the “Financial Times” and a former member of the editorial board of the “Wall Street Journal,” specializing in economics. Shlaes is the author of “The Greedy Hand,” a national bestseller on America’s tax code, and “Germany: The Empire Within.” Her latest book, “The Forgotten Man,” an exploration of the politics and economics of the Great Depression, is on the “New York Times” extended bestseller list.Photo Copy: Bloomberg syndicated columnist Amity Shlaes.
