Buies Creek – Campbell University welcomed a delegation of educators from Tunku Abdul Rahman College (TARC) in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia during the week of Nov. 2.
The delegation was comprised of Dr. Ng Swee Chin, head of the School of Arts and Science; Dr. Loke Chui Fung, head of the Division of Chemistry and Biology; and Mr. Chan Fung Lin, the head of the Division of Microelectronics and Physics.
During their visit to the Buies Creek campus, the group met with Campbell University provost Dr. Dwaine Greene and Dr. Mark Hammond, dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, to discuss the upcoming reaffirmation of accreditation.
Campbell University has been involved in a cooperative program with Tunku Abdul Rahman College since 1979. The purpose of the program is to provide a Bachelor of Science degree for selected TARC students. This fully accredited program has provided a needed educational opportunity in the sciences for students in Malaysia. Over 11,000 students have received Bachelor of Science degrees through the university’s Malaysian program.
Campbell president Jerry Wallace stated that the TARC program plays an important role in the University’s mission.
“We are thrilled to host our Malaysian guests and colleagues. Campbell University has been blessed for many years with dedicated partners at Tunku Abdul Rahman College, said Wallace. “Jointly, we are truly preparing students for leadership and purposeful lives around the world.”
Dr. Ng, an alumna of Campbell University, received a bachelor’s degree in Computer Science and Physics in 1989. She went on to receive a Master of Science degree in digital system engineering from the University of Manchester and a PhD in engineering education from Exeter University.
Dr. Loke received a Bachelor of Science degree in biochemistry and microbiology from the Universiti Pertanian Malaysia, and a Master of Science in molecular biology and PhD in biotechnology-genetic engineering from Universiti Putra Malaysia.
Mr. Chan received a Diploma of Science from TARC, a Bachelor of Science degree from London and a Master of Science degree from the University of Essex.
These Malaysian guests follow a lengthy line of visitors from TARC to Campbell over the thirty years of the program’s existence. Most recently, during the December 2008 graduation ceremonies in Buies Creek, TARC Council Chairman, Tan Sri Ong Ka Ting, was awarded the honorary Doctor of Laws degree. Accompanying him was TARC principal, Dr. Tan Chik Heok.
