Team Campbell rides again

For the 6th consecutive year a group of cyclists representing Campbell University participated in the North Carolina Tour de Cure, a fundraising cycling event sponsored by the American Diabetes Association (ADA). This event is held in over 40 states. The 2009 Team Campbell was composed of 22 members, primarily pharmacy students, faculty, friends and family members. One team member, Ross Jones, rode in the event with her mother, Colleen Goddard. The event took place on the weekend of June 6 and 7. The start/finish line was at the Koka Booth Amphitheatre in Cary, N.C.

Riders have a choice of three events to participate in: 12 mile or 40 mile rides in addition to a longer two day ride, which this year was from Cary to Southern Pines and back, a round trip of 160 miles. Team Campbell was represented in all three events. In addition several Campbell students participated as volunteers, helping with registration activities at the start line and also assisting at the road stops, providing riders with fluids and food.

Over the last 6 years, Team Campbell has raised nearly $50,000 to help in Diabetes research and treatment. Over 400 riders participated in the event this year, raising over $200,000 total for the ADA. Pharmacy student Chris Brennick felt that “it’s just a great ride for a great cause. The rest areas are well thought out and fully stocked with plenty of goodies to keep you going, and the energy is just phenomenal.” Faculty member Dr. Valerie Clinard added that: “Participating in Tour de Cure is a wonderful way to give to a very worthy cause. Riding with others who share a love for cycling while supporting the community is a rewarding way to spend your day.”

Students, faculty, and staff throughout the university are invited to participate in the Tour de Cure next year either as riders or volunteers. If anyone is interested in learning more about Team Campbell and the Tour contact Dr. Bob Cisneros at 910-893-1724 or at [email protected]/* */.
