Dr. Michelle Suhan Thomas, assistant professor of biology at Campbell University, received the Dean’s award for Excellence in Research. Thomas’ research has resulted in the development of new laboratory exercises, equipment and techniques that have been successfully incorporated into her classes. “The greatest impact of her research,” said Dr. Mark Hammond, dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, “is the exceptional mentoring she provides our students at the laboratory bench.”
Thomas graduated from Grove City College with a Bachelor of Science degree in molecular biology and holds a Ph.D. in microbiology and immunology from West Virginia University. She joined Campbell’s College of Arts and Sciences in 2000. She is a member of several professional organizations, including the American Society for Microbiology and the National Association of Biology Teachers. In addition, Thomas has been successful as co-author for external grant funding for the purchase of $100,000 worth of DNA sequencing and analysis equipment.
“Dr. Michelle Thomas has done a remarkable job of establishing herself as an active and effective teacher-scholar for the purpose of preparing our students for successful careers in the sciences,” Hammond said. “She exemplifies the use of research as a means to enrich the teaching process.”
Thomas is married to Chris Thomas. The couple resides in Lillington.
