Three-star general to receive Lifetime Achievement Award

 

BUIES CREEK – Lt. Gen. Susan S. Lawrence, a 1979 graduate of Campbell University and the first woman appointed as Chief Information Officer for the U.S. Army, will receive a Lifetime Achievement Award at the School of Education’s annual Commissioning Ceremony

This year’s ceremony, which honors seniors as they prepare to enter their respective professions, is set for 4:30 p.m. on Feb. 10, in Butler Chapel. The keynote speaker at the ceremony will be North Carolina Sen. Dr. William R. Purcell.

A native of Ida Grove, Iowa, Lawrence is also the second female three-star general currently serving in active duty and the fourth woman to be promoted to the rank of lieutenant general in the Army. As the CIO, Lawrence reports directly to the Secretary of the Army for setting strategic direction and objectives and supervises all  Army C4 (command, control, communications and computers) and IT functions.

She oversees a $10 billion annual IT budget.

Lawrence received a  Bachelor of Science degree from  Campbell in 1979 and holds a Master’s degree in Information Systems Management from the University of Georgia.

The Feb. 10 ceremony will be followed by the annual Friends of the School of Education Banquet. In addition to the Lifetime Achievement Award, there will be Outstanding Student awards presented to students representing each department of the School of Education – Professional Education, Psychology and Social Work. Other awards include the Last Decade Alumna Award and the School of Education Outstanding Alumna Award.
