BUIES CREEK – Campbell University Divinity School has long been thought of by students and alumni as a school that has been blessed by students of academic excellence and ministry commitment … and by generous donors. Connecting these realities, the Divinity School announced this week it is offering eligible applicants the opportunity to compete for a full-tuition honors scholarship, which will provide for master-level divinity degrees offered at Campbell.
“I am excited to welcome students who exemplify excellence in academics and in ministry to Campbell Divinity School,” said Dean Andrew Wakefield, who added the scholarship will seek students who are not only fine scholars, but strongly committed to their “calling” in the ministry as well.
The first three recipients of this scholarship are Sarah Gordon of Durham, Lacey Davis of Hickory and Joshua Owens of Roseboro.
Gordon, a graduate of UNC-Chapel Hill who attends Hayes Barton Baptist Church in Raleigh said, “The honors scholarship did more than provide financial means for me to attend Campbell Divinity School. It also affirmed God’s call on my life.”
She said she knew God was not only calling her to a career in ministry but was preparing a way for her as well. Upon graduation, Gordon plans to minister to children and families, sharing the love of Jesus with them, she said, and helping them to see the ways God is at work in their lives.
Davis, a graduate of Mars Hill College who attends L.I.V.E. Church, said, “I know that Campbell is the place where I am called to be and the honors scholarship made this possible – what a blessing. Divinity school was and is a major step of faith for me.”
Owens is a graduate of Campbell University and currently serves at Roseboro First Baptist Church.
“Currently serving at a small church, which is financially limited in what it can offer me as a youth pastor, I was concerned about how I would pay for my theological education, not to mention paying for other necessary aspects of my life,” Owens said. “Yet with the gift of the honors scholarship, I have been able to continue to serve where I feel God has called me.”
For this scholarship, applicants must meet the following criteria – undergraduate GPA of 3.3 or higher; evidence of significant ministry experience; evidence of potential for leadership in ministry; and evidence of clear sense of vocational call to ministry.
In order to be eligible, the candidate must apply to Campbell Divinity School and have a letter of nomination submitted on his or her behalf by a pastor, campus minister or professor by Feb. 1.
Nominees who apply for but do not receive the full-tuition scholarship will be considered for other significant scholarship assistance, covering up to 75 percent of the cost of tuition.
