Two named winners of full scholarship to Campbell

 

BUIES CREEK – Campbell University announced this week the two recipients of its annual full scholarships, each valued at over $128,000.

Clayton High School senior Courtney Jennings will receive the J. Hunter and Mabel C. Strickland Memorial Scholarship, while Alec Powers of Village Christian Academy in Fayetteville has earned the Glays Baars Campbell Scholarship. The two high school seniors were among the more than 40 students competing for the scholarships to Campbell University during a two-day event held on the Buies Creek campus.

Both scholarships include tuition, housing, meals, textbooks and parking for all four years of undergraduate studies at Campbell.

Jennings is the daughter of Jeffrey and Lou Jennings of Clayton. She has been accepted to study in Campbell’s biology program. Jennings currently has a high school cumulative GPA of 4.0, and she is ranked third in her senior class. She is the 16th recipient of the Strickland Scholarship.

Powers is the son of Henry and Laurie Powers, and he, too, has been accepted to study in Campbell’s biology program. Powers’ high school GPA is 4.0, and he is currently ranked second in his senior class. He is the 12th recipient of the Gladys Baars Campbell Scholarship.

Strickland Memorial Scholarship

Former trustees of Campbell University, J. Hunter and Mabel C. Strickland wanted to establish a fund to further Christian higher education. A successful entrepreneur, J. Hunter Strickland was an alumnus of Campbell. The first full J. Hunter and Mabel C. Strickland Scholarship competition was held in the 1993-1994 academic year.

Baars Campbell Scholarship

A native of Duplin County, Gladys Baars Campbell graduated from Campbell Academy in 1924. She received training to become a nurse at Charlotte Sanatorium. Her nursing career spanned 43 years. The first Gladys Baars Campbell Scholarship awards were made during the 1987-1988 academic year at Campbell. The first full scholarship competition was held in the 2001-2002 academic year.
