Buies Creek, N.C. – Osteopathic Physician Dr. Barbara E. Walker, of Wilmington, N.C., received the honorary Doctor of Science degree from Campbell University at the University’s commencement exercises on Saturday, May 14. Walker delivered the commencement address to the graduates.
Considered a pioneer in osteopathic medicine in North Carolina, Walker is a founding physician and current faculty member of the New Hanover Regional Medical Center Residency in Family Medicine. She received her bachelor’s degree from the University of California at Irvine and the Doctor of Osteopathy from the College of Osteopathic Medicine of the Pacific. Walker completed an internship in Internal Medicine at William Beaumont Army Medical Center, a residency in Family Practice at Womack Army Community Hospital and a fellowship in Faculty Development in Family Medicine at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
In addition to her responsibilities at the medical center, Walker serves as an adjunct clinical professor for the Pikeville College of Osteopathic Medicine, an associate professor of Family Medicine with the Edward Via Virginia College of Osteopathic Medicine and an associate professor in Family Medicine at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Walker is a current member of the board of trustees for the American Osteopathic Association (AOA) and President Emeritus of the North Carolina Osteopathic Medical Association, who presented her with the Distinguished Service Award. She also served as first and second vice president of the AOA.
A veteran of 26 years in the United States Army, Walker achieved the rank of colonel. She retired from the military in 2006, where she distinguished herself as the first female physician to be deployed with the 82nd Airborne Division.
