Weaver receives Dean’s award for teaching excellence

Buies Creek, N.C.-Dr. Debora J. Weaver, of the College of Arts and Sciences, is a recipient of a 2009 Campbell University Dean’s Excellence in Teaching award. The awards were presented on Saturday, May 9, at a luncheon held in the Alumni Room of Marshbanks Dining Hall.

An associate professor of biology, Weaver earned a bachelor’s degree from Goshen College and a Ph.D. in Biological Science from the University of Maryland at Baltimore County. She spent a year teaching at the Muhimbili University of Health Sciences in Tanzania before beginning her teaching career at Campbell University in 1992.

“I can best describe Deb Weaver as a loving, caring and passionate woman with a brilliant mind and a service-filled heart,” said Dr. Mark Hammond, dean of the College of Arts and Sciences. “She is a meticulous and demanding cellular biochemist who has established a strong undergraduate foundation in cell biology and biochemistry that has ensured the success of hundreds of Campbell students in graduate and professional degree programs around the world.”

Weaver’s enthusiasm for service learning is reflected in her work to establish both the Honors and Study Abroad programs at Campbell, Hammond added. She was named Omicron Delta Kappa Professor of the Year in 1996.
