Buies Creek, N.C. – Luby and Catherine Wood, formerly of Johnston County, were the recipients of the Algernon Sydney Sullivan Award at Campbell University’s spring commencement exercises on Saturday, May 14, in the John W. Pope, Jr. Convocation Center.
Established by the New York Southern Society in 1925, the award honors the memory of Algernon Sydney Sullivan, a prominent New York philanthropist, lawyer and businessman during the late 19th century. Presented annually at Campbell’s spring graduation service, the award recognizes the graduating senior who best exemplifies the Sullivan ideal of compassion, intellect and conduct as evidence of a spirit of love for and helpfulness to others.
Known for their support and dedication to Christian higher education, Luby and Catherine Wood have been loyal friends of Campbell University for many years. Luby Wood is a retired executive of the Lowe’s Corporation and is a successful entrepreneur with multiple farming, land and business interests. He and his wife Catherine, a former staff nurse in orthopedics and neurology at Gaston Memorial Hospital, have invested their time and resources in Campbell through their support of major building projects such as the Convocation Center, the Robert H. and Anna Gardner Butler Chapel and Luby Wood’s service on Campbell’s Board of Trustees. To acknowledge their generosity, the University chapel’s sanctuary was dedicated in memory and honor of Catherine Wood’s parents, Benjamin Joseph and Lattie E. McLamb Wood.
The Woods are active members of Trinity Baptist Church in Raleigh.
